The first EKA National Championships were held on Saturday 9 April 2011 at the English Institute of Sports in Sheffield.  As in all competitions reentered by FEKO there was a motivated and enthusiastic team, this time led by the new National Coach Stewart Tompkins.
Although the running order had to be changed this did not deter the team from another excellent performance.  The first medal of the day went to Ashley Forster who secured bronze in the 15-17 kata age group.  This placing spurred the team on and the achievement was quickly followed by a Gold in Shobu Ippon by Jack Nicholas, a Gold in Shobu Sanbon and a bronze in Shobu Ippon by Jamie Cure.  Sohail Ahmed came up against a seasoned fighter in Greg Gentleman in both finals and although leading for most of the matches, narrowly lost out both times but gained creditable silver medals in Shobu Sanbon and Shobu Ippon.
The women performed very well in their individual events with Claire Farmer securing Gold in Shobu Sanbon and Bronze in Shobu Ippon, Helen Hibberd securing Gold in Shobu Ippon and Shobu Sanbon and Heba Khafagy securing Silver in Shobu Sanbon.
The women also showed just how strong they are by running out easy winners of the Rotation Team event.  They also secured silver in the team kumite in the female team events the formidable partnership of Amy Wright-Hamilton, Heba Khafagy and Helen Hibberd took gold in Rotation and Shobu Ippon.
We now look forward with eager anticipation to the WUKF World Championships in Italy in May 2011.
